Our Story
Hi, I’m Jiayan — a homeschool mum and the founder of Voices in the Rain Children’s Choir,
also known as VOIR.
What began as a small singing space for my own child, during a season when she was going through a knee condition, has slowly grown into something very close to my heart.
Over time, VOIR has become more than just a children’s choir. It has become a place where children come together to sing, build friendships, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of being part of a community.
Through this journey, I have come to realise that singing is so much more than music. For a child, it can become a safe space — a place to express themselves, to be heard, to feel accepted, and to know that they belong.
Personally, having grown up in a difficult home environment, I often think about how much it would have meant to have a space like this as a child — a place where I could simply be, feel safe, and sing with others.
That is why VOIR exists.
We hope to be a community choir that welcomes children from all walks of life — not only families who are able to afford music classes, but also children who love to sing and may not otherwise have the opportunity to be part of a choir.
At VOIR, we believe every child deserves a space to discover joy, hope, confidence, and belonging — even through difficult seasons.
Through community singing, we hope to nurture not just young voices, but young hearts.
Conductor
Teacher Huey
Teacher Huey is a passionate musician with extensive experience in piano teaching, youth band leadership, and managing children’s programmes in local primary schools.
Over the past 10 years, she has been actively involved in music arrangement and choral conducting across various primary and secondary schools in Singapore.
She is known for her fun, energetic, and sensitive teaching style, and has a deep passion for nurturing young musicians. Outside of music, she also enjoys photography.
Choir Support Teacher
Teacher Xianling
Teacher Xianling is one of VOIR’s dedicated choir parent supporters, and we are grateful for the many ways she contributes to the life of our choir.
She carries many hats within the VOIR community — from assisting the conductor during choir sessions, supporting the planning and flow of rehearsals, helping to manage children’s behaviour, and serving as an accompanist for the choir.
Beyond her support at VOIR, Teacher Xianling is also a talented violist and music teacher with her own ensemble. Her musical experience and heart for teaching bring a valuable richness to our choir community, helping children experience music with greater depth, warmth, and joy.
Her presence brings steadiness, care, and support to both the children and the team. Whether she is helping the children stay focused, supporting musical learning, or assisting behind the scenes, Teacher Xianling plays an important role in creating a warm, orderly, and encouraging choir environment.
At VOIR, we believe that community is built not only through singing, but also through the people who quietly and faithfully serve. Teacher Xianling’s support reflects the heart of VOIR — where parents, teachers, and children come together to build a safe and meaningful space for children to grow through music.
